What Is a Senior Move Manager and Do We Need One?
Moving is about much more than getting boxes from one home to another.
For an older adult leaving a longtime home, there may be decades of belongings to sort through, decisions about what will fit in the new space, items to donate or sell, movers to coordinate, boxes to pack, and an entirely new home to set up.
And all of that is happening during what can already be a significant life transition.
This is where a Senior Move Manager® can be incredibly helpful.
What Is a Senior Move Manager®?
A Senior Move Manager® is a professional who specializes in helping older adults and their families with the many details involved in rightsizing, organizing, relocating, and—in some cases—simplifying a home for someone who plans to remain there.
Senior Move Managers® often provide much more than packing and unpacking.
Depending on the company and the services you need, they may help with:
- Sorting and organizing belongings
- Deciding what will move to the new home
- Creating a floor plan for the new space
- Coordinating donations, consignment, estate sales, auctions, or disposal
- Packing and preparing for moving day
- Coordinating and overseeing the moving company
- Arranging storage or shipments
- Unpacking at the new home
- Setting up furniture and belongings so the new space feels like home
- Coordinating related services such as cleaning or removal of unwanted items
Specific services vary by company, so it's important to understand exactly what a Senior Move Manager® provides before hiring them.
How Is a Senior Move Manager® Different From a Moving Company?
A traditional moving company generally focuses on transporting your belongings from one location to another.
A Senior Move Manager® can help manage the larger process surrounding the move.
For example, before moving day, you may need to determine what furniture will fit in your new home, sort through a basement or attic, decide what to do with belongings you're not taking, and pack everything that is moving.
After the truck arrives, someone still needs to unpack, organize the kitchen, make the bed, arrange furniture, and help turn an unfamiliar space into a functional home.
A Senior Move Manager® can coordinate many of those pieces.
Some Senior Move Management companies also provide moving services themselves, while others work alongside a separate professional moving company.
Do We Really Need a Senior Move Manager®?
Not every move requires one.
Some families have the time, ability, and desire to manage the entire process themselves.
But a Senior Move Manager® may be particularly helpful when:
- You're overwhelmed by the amount of belongings in the home.
- Family members live far away or have limited availability.
- The move needs to happen within a short timeframe.
- You're moving from a much larger home into a smaller space.
- You need help determining what will fit in the new home.
- Family members have different opinions about what should happen with belongings.
- Physical limitations make packing and organizing difficult.
- You simply don't want to manage dozens of different details and vendors yourself.
You also don't necessarily need help with everything.
Some people need support from beginning to end. Others may only need floor planning, packing, move-day coordination, or unpacking.
A good Senior Move Manager® should help you determine what support actually makes sense for your situation.
What Is NASMM?
The National Association of Senior & Specialty Move Managers® (NASMM) is the professional association for Senior Move Managers®.
NASMM members complete required education and must meet professional requirements, including insurance requirements and adherence to NASMM's Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice.
You may also see additional credentials when researching companies.
SMM-C refers to a Senior Move Manager®-Certified professional. This is an individual certification that requires both education and documented experience.
NASMM A+ Accreditation is different. It is an organizational accreditation awarded to Senior Move Management companies that complete a more extensive review process demonstrating their alignment with NASMM's standards.
Membership, certification, and accreditation are not interchangeable, so don't hesitate to ask a company which credentials it holds.
Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Senior Move Manager®
Finding the right fit matters. Consider asking:
- Are you a member of NASMM?
- How long have you provided Senior Move Management services?
- Which services do you provide directly?
- Are you fully insured?
- Do you have SMM-C certification or NASMM A+ Accreditation?
- How do you charge for your services?
- Will I receive a written estimate and contract?
- Can you provide references?
- Will you create a floor plan for my new home?
- Who will pack and unpack my belongings?
- Do you coordinate the moving company?
- How do you help with belongings I'm not taking?
- Will you completely set up my new home?
Most importantly, make sure you feel comfortable with the people who will be working alongside you.
Rightsizing a longtime home can be very personal. You're not simply deciding what fits into a moving truck. You may be handling belongings connected to decades of memories.
The right team should respect that.
Where Does Dovetail Fit Into the Move?
At Dovetail Companies, we help older adults and families look at the whole transition—not simply moving day.
That may include determining where you're going next, creating the right sequence for the transition, coordinating the timing of your move and home sale, and identifying the professionals needed along the way.
Dovetail does not provide hands-on Senior Move Management services in-house. Instead, we work with and connect families to trusted Senior Move Management partners who can provide the on-site support needed for rightsizing, packing, moving, unpacking, and settling into a new home.
That distinction is important because a later-life move often involves several professionals working together.
You shouldn't have to become the project manager for all of them.
The goal is to build the right team around you, create a clear plan, and make the transition feel more manageable from beginning to end.
Navigating a Later-Life Transition?
At Dovetail Companies, we help older adults and their families navigate the decisions that come with planning, rightsizing, moving, and selling a longtime home. Our approach brings Calm · Clarity · Connection™ to the process—helping you understand your options, determine the right next steps, and connect with trusted professionals when additional support is needed.
Whether you're planning ahead or already facing a transition, you don't have to figure out every piece at once.
