It’s Not Just a Chair: The Heart Behind the Move

It’s Not Just a Chair: The Heart Behind the Move
Initial client visits are a time of discovery.
We ask questions that invite stories—how long they’ve lived in their home, why they chose their particular community, and how they envision their next chapter. Our favorite answer to that last question?
“That’s why you’re here!”
Some clients arrive with a clear vision. They've measured furniture, sketched floor plans, and know exactly what will fit where. Others need more guidance, and we walk through that process with them—cataloging furniture, measuring, and helping imagine what their next space could look like.
Floor plans are powerful (and we’ll save that topic for another blog).
But this story is about the old recliner.
During an initial visit, clients are sometimes joined by a trusted adult child, friend, or relative. That’s when things get interesting. Some clients defer to those around them, while others hold firm to their preferences. As move managers, we follow the client’s lead. Our role is to support their decisions—especially when it comes to sentimental belongings.
Which brings us back to that recliner.
As we tour the home, clients point out what they want to bring. And often, there it is: the old recliner. Worn. Faded. Spotted. To others, it may look out of place in a freshly painted, brand-new space. The suggestion to replace it with something newer may come quickly and with good intentions.
But we see something else.
If the client wants to bring the chair—and it’s structurally safe—we say, “Let’s do it.” Because that recliner isn’t just a chair. It’s a witness to milestones. It held them during tough times and joyful ones. It may be where they first met a grandchild. It’s molded just right for Sunday naps or Wheel of Fortune. It’s comfort and consistency in a time of change.
And when the client walks into their unpacked new home and sees that chair? They often walk right over to it, rest a hand on the armrest, or settle in with a sigh of relief. In that moment, against fresh paint and new carpet, it belongs. It lights up the room in a way no brand-new chair could.
That said, sometimes clients decide it is time for a new recliner—and that’s perfectly okay, too. We’re advocates for new recliners when it’s their time. Our goal is always the same: to support the choices that make our clients feel most at home.
It’s not just recliners, either.
That old kitchen table? It might not be the trendiest piece, but to the client, it’s command central—where bills are paid, calendars are updated, and thank-you notes are written with morning coffee. We’ll make sure the caddy of paperwork lands right where it always has—because that sense of familiarity matters.
At the end of the day, we are advocates for recliners, tables, nightstands, duvets—and most of all, people.
We honor the memories embedded in things, the comfort of routines, and the sacredness of choice. To some, these items may dull a sparkling new space—but we believe they’re exactly what makes it shine.
A note from Joe Scott, Director of Engagement
"Twenty years ago, my siblings and I moved my mom from her home of forty years to a retirement community. She didn’t take what we wanted, what we thought would look best in her new space. Instead, selected the items that she valued, in addition to purchasing some new and proudly found comfort in her new home, ultimately finding pride and comfort.
I was ten years into a thirty-year career in financial services. That experience inspired me to retire early and find a second career in senior move management, helping older adults find clarity and joy during their journey.
Our team has professional and/or personal experience with senior transitions. We understand the emotions the experience can conjure and the satisfaction that comes from a happily settled loved one."
